There was a demand for big-budget female-driven action movies playing in the Indiana Jones/James Bond sandbox, and the IP was known even to folks who didn’t play the game. $131 million in 2001/$212 million adjustedĬasting Angelina Jolie, fresh off an Oscar win, as video game icon Lara Croft was a brilliant example of star+character casting. The humans still get a spotlight, including a subplot for Sonic 1 breakout Natasha Rothwell, and the third act delivers a terrific “the game brought to life” action climax. Ryan Reynolds is charming and funny as the title character, but Justice Smith makes it all work with a credible and compelling dramatic performance as an underachiever trying to hunt down his missing father. Helmed by Rob Letterman, this film takes a small corner of the Pokémon universe and spins a distinctive blend of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Blade Runner. Whether this film ever spawns an actual sequel and its $433 million total from a $150 million budget (with the knowledge that many folks were just curious the first time) puts that in doubt, Detective Pikachu remains one of the very best, and certainly most ambitious, video game movies ever made. $144 million in 2019/$149 million adjusted Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (Warner Bros.)
